Chinese cuisine in Soho London

"The Duck and Rice" in London is an exceptional restaurant located in the vibrant Soho district, offering a fascinating blend of traditional British pub character and authentic Chinese cuisine. Founded by renowned restaurateur Alan Yau, who has shaped the culinary scene with concepts like Wagamama, Hakkasan, and Yauatcha, the establishment opened its doors in 2015. It was created on the site of a former, historic pub, preserving its original charm while simultaneously creating a modern, stylish atmosphere. The restaurant spans two floors: a welcoming pub area on the ground floor, and an elegant dining room above that exudes an intimate yet luxurious vibe.

Unique restaurant in London

The cuisine at "The Duck and Rice" is characterized by its focus on comfort and community, inspired by dishes one might find in households across China and other parts of Asia. The chef has carefully crafted the menu to unite authentic flavors with a touch of sophistication. Particularly noteworthy is the crispy duck, which stands out with its juicy texture and perfectly seasoned skin—often served with homemade pancakes and a sweet plum sauce that complements the flavor. Another remarkable dish is the Kung Pao Chicken, which invigorates the senses with its spicy heat and crunchy peanuts. The dim sum, such as the delicate shrimp shumai or the creative taro croquettes, are also frequently praised by guests and provide a light, flavorful accompaniment to the heartier main courses.

Pub and Asian dishes

The drinks menu is equally impressive and reflects the dual identity of the venue. In the pub area, traditional British ales sit alongside freshly tapped Czech pilsner, served from large copper tanks—an innovation that the restaurant was among the first to introduce in central London. The combination of this cool, slightly bitter beer with the spicy Asian cuisine is particularly well-received. Additionally, there are artfully mixed cocktails that round out the experience and add a modern touch. On warm days or after a nearby theater visit, it offers a relaxed setting to unwind in the evening.

Authentic dishes in London

The atmosphere at "The Duck and Rice" is unique: the pub on the ground floor exudes a casual, sociable vibe, with high tables and cozy seating areas that welcome dogs—a plus for pet lovers. In contrast, the dining room upstairs is quieter and ideal for a leisurely meal with friends or family. The decor combines elements like gleaming brass, large windows, and dark wood accents, giving the space a touch of elegance without feeling stiff. However, during busy times, it can get quite loud, and the closeness between tables is sometimes noted as a drawback—a small price to pay for the vibrant Soho energy.

Delicious dim sum in Soho

Service is generally described as friendly and attentive, though there may be slight delays during peak times. The restaurant's concept appeals to a wide audience, from tourists seeking an alternative to the often crowded restaurants in Chinatown to locals who appreciate the unusual fusion of pub culture and Asian culinary art. The menu also offers options for various dietary preferences, including vegan and gluten-free dishes, increasing accessibility.

The story behind the creation of "The Duck and Rice" is also noteworthy. Alan Yau drew inspiration from his dual cultural heritage—Chinese and English—to create a venue that connects the vibrant history of the location with new impulses. The result is a place that nourishes not only the stomach but also the soul, uniting nostalgia and innovation in a way that is unparalleled in London.

Angela delivered a spectacular experience for us. From the food to the attention to detailing in the service, everything was suburb. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough, we will be coming back here. Also, highly recommend the duck crispy rolls, duck and rice and the Singapore fried noodles

We had arrived ahead of our booking and despite it being busy we were seated at our table in the restaurant upstairs. There was a vibe to the restaurant that we took an instant liking to. We kicked off our dinner with a round of baby Guinness shots and some cocktails whilst we waited for our starters to arrive. We ordered: Char siu buns Scallop and prawn shumai Crispy prawn wonton Chicken wings They were all lovely and the accompanying sauces. However, under no circumstances should the chicken wings be classed as wings. They were ridiculously tiny, its misleading to call them wings, they can only be described a chicken tips. For mains, we had: Duck and rice Kung po chicken Assam chilli sea bass Curry soft shell crab Chicken chow mein Crispy duck rice Egg fried rice Once again, everything was delicious. The fish and the curry had malaysian influences. I was really torn between the beef or the duck and rice, but i decided to go with the duck and rice as it was a house special and rightly so! I had chosen wisely as it was the standout dish. I actually think it was the best duck I've had, and the sauce was just perfect, not sweet or overpowering. The older one thought so as well, and i could see him making a mental note to order that if he were to visit again! Duck and rice is definitely deserving of all its rave reviews.

Delicious food and a good selection of drinks and cocktails. We (group of 4) went for an early dinner ahead of a West End show and the location is very convenient for the theatres. We had the crispy duck with pancakes to start followed by beef tenderloin, kung po chicken, wasabi prawns, and sea bass. All excellent. We would definitely come again.

From Duck and Rice I tried the scallop&prawn shumai, soup dumplings, prawn&chive dumplings , seabass , black pepper beef tenderloin, Japanese aubergine& tofu, the duck and special fried rice. Everything was nice, especially all the dim sum. The black pepper tenderloin had good flavour but some of the beef was chewy. Service and atmosphere were good, overall it was good but not quite worth the price.

Rude servers, over rated restaurant. There are more better dim Sum in Chinatown than this cold seating restaurant with rude waitress. Don't be so stupid to spend time queuing. Plus the dishes are not specially cheap either. 10 out of 10, my friends went. They came back to tell the same story about the rude service. Most also say, they prefered to go to Chinatown to enjoy the dim sum. Not going to go back to that cold, compact seating, cramed with not even a relaxing place to enjoy.💔

Decent food but by no means great, especially for the price. The rice in the signature ‘duck and rice’ dish was lacking in flavour, and egg fried rice had barely any taste of egg. Also can be very loud in the restaurant which is a bit much - tables too close together.

Great place for a meal with family or friends. Excellent location in middle of Soho. We paid £175 inc service for 5 people which I thought was not too bad at all. The decor is smart and understated. The ambience is lively. Service is incredibly attentive and they have plenty of staff. Mentioned it was my daughters 15th birthday celebration and we got a special treat just for her, compliments of the restaurant. We were served by the brilliant Hannah who was so lovely and helpful, and talked us through the whole menu as we hadn’t been before. What an asset to your team she is 😀! All in all we had a lovely time - thank you for making my daughter’s day special.
